What does tdaonp stand for? It’s short for the delicate art of noise pollution. The name of the one-man independent business I run. I try to make a living writing, translating and thinking.

fenrirmakara:

also, duct tape on your arms, a few layers, but not too tight. basically it’ll stop a zombie taking a chunk out of your arm if you’re reloading or your blade gets jammed in a zombie

wearing a wetsuit underneath your clothing would also be useful. remember; they were human once, humans have blunt teeth! you try biting through duct tape AND a wet suit

never duct tape joints, your movements will be limited, and you want to be fast and danger (gotta go fast)

don’t hole up in small houses either that’s a recipe for disaster, you want somewhere with a secure upstairs, and a way down from the upstairs that is zombie free or can easily be cleared of zombies (avoid fire exits with steps leading up to them though, unless they have gates at the bottom)

sound = attraction, so if you do have guns, use them only in emergencies or for the sake of popping one head you’ll be greeted with many many more

raid your local medical shops, and get there first, nobody is going to stop and share it out equally while they’re panicking. don’t hit out at somebody unless they hit out at you, though, you already have unintelligent corpses pitted against you, you don’t want sentient humans on your case as well (zombies don’t do the revenge thing, humans do!)

try not to piss people off, because as stated before, yes, humans like revenge

don’t try and be clever and use yourself as live bait; yes playing the hero is glorious in movies, but it doesn’t work so glamorously in real life

large numbers isn’t a good idea. you want small groups, even if you just branch out from being in a larger group, because if there’s a lot of you you are a bigger target, but don’t then go off and decide to be in groups that are too small in case you get surrounded (in which case, the duct tape and wet suits will come in handy)

food shouldn’t be that hard to come by, most people would have attempted to flee the area straight from their houses and packed what they had, raiding local shops could still be worth it. but remember, know your way in, your way out, and double check there’s nothing in the shop ready to sneak up behind you while you’re reaching up for that tin of beans

half balaclava masks or something similar to cover your lower face while fighting zombies could also be useful, you don;t want to accidentally ingest flying zombie fluids and end up one of them, that’d be a nasty surprise for your group to wake up to (since going solo possibly isn’t a good idea)

and always, ALWAYS, have a way to start a fire on you

zombies burn

Good steps, apart from the last one- Max Brook’s book states you should never light a live zombie!

i’m ready. i should stop reading zombie novels but i don’t think i can.

Also: play lots of Dayz. Practice makes perfect.

minutia-and-mishigas:

Victo Ngai

This illustration accompanies short story ” A Window or Small Box” by Jedediah Berry for Tor.com. This fun, trippy and weird novelette is about a couple about to get married who find themselves on the run from “goons” in a magical alternative United States. I really enjoyed the magical quality, colorful visuals and the layers of riddles in the story, which inspired this particular piece. And if it’s not obvious enough, I was also paying tribute to the one and the only Escher.

( I was re-listening to my favorite book LOTR while inking this piece, so the pattern went a bit crazy! )

You can read the story here.

Big thanks to AD Irene Gallo, always a pleasure. I find my best works are often for clients who trust me and let me go wild.

tastefullyoffensive:

Camping comes naturally to these two.

Lighting the stove... sometimes a little flame like this turns into a mini inferno before turning into a polite gasfire. But I've had this stove for 20+ years and never yet set a campsite on fire...

After a long hike... we're all stretched out.

Evening falls.

Sleeping arrangement... for the first five minutes. Then the battle for ownership of the sleeping bag usually began. I didn't always win.

Spip still waking up in the early morning sun (around 6 in the AM).

Saff already wide awake and ready to announce any movement. Hares, foxes but above all, the farm yard cats.

Some impressions from my four day hiking trip with the dogs. 53.3 Kilometers (33.12 miles) in a little under four days with 20 kg on my back. No huge accomplishment but not exactly a trifle either. In any case very enjoyable. :-)

Photo

Enjoying the sun.

Enjoying the sun.

theonlymagicleftisart:

- Multitrack DAW: simple digital audio workstation, expanded to 24 tracks. I know there are more elaborate ones (Cubasis and Auria for instance), but this one does all I need it to do without taxing the iPad too much and costing an arm and a leg.
- Audiobus: for connecting synths, drum machines and effects processors to each other or the daw. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
- Korg iPolysix: two polysixes, a sequencer and a mixer. What’s not to like. Great sounds and a chance to try out that other 80’s budget synth (owning a Juno 60, I never got this one).
- Korg iMS20: for those really wacky sounds and sequenced mayhem. Brutal sounds are only a few cord connections away. Modular synth lite, so to speak.
- iMini: Mini Moog, the legend. I lust after one of these ever since the early 80’s when I started to become interested in synths. They are still way above budget for me but this one comes close enough, if you take the price and portability into account. Love it.
- Animoog: a synth that lets you create sounds that are weird and distinctive. Modulating between basic sounds by self defined paths makes for some very complex soundscapes. Some can become compositions on their own strength.
- Sunrizer: at first glance it looks like a pretty standard synth. But don’t be fooled, this app can create some astonishing sounds that can almost tear your ears off!
- Nlog synth PRO: apart from the standard wave forms, this synth comes with 16 wavetables and when you sling that through one of the 7 filter types things start to sound interesting. Very interesting indeed.
- CrystalSynthXT: a true powerhouse of weird sounds. More parameters to edit than any synth I know and thanks to the breed function a very inspiring synth. I have used the desktop version of this synth for many years and am very happy with the iPad version. It’s a must if you are into designing sounds.
- Real piano HD: simple piano app. Nothing more, nothing less. And it’s free.
- Mugician: here for its curiosity value. It’s the forerunner of Geosynth I believe (see below). Unique interface.
- Geosynth: designed by Jordan Rudess (Dream Theatre). This synth evolves the interface found in Mugician and couples it to brutal sounds and soundscapes. Thanks to its interface it is very easy to create those octave racing solo’s that take you from trouser flapping low to ear drum piercing high in the space of two bars.
- Launchkey: Novation takes a bog standard synth, throws in a super creative way of adjusting the parameters and couples the whole lot to an arpeggiator. Great creative tool.
- Samplewiz: also designed by Jordan Rudess. This is a sampler in the tradition of the famous Akai samplers of the early 90’s, but with an interface Akai would still die for. It truly unlocks the creative power of sampling all over again.
- Turquoise DS: 9 drumpads and a synth engine. Who says that drum tracks can only contain boom chick boom chick?
- Bebot: it looks like a child’s toy and maybe it is. But if I had a penny for every time we put a child’s toy to great use in the studio, I’d have made money in those days! It’s free, fun and may surprise you!
- iElectribe: beats, beats and beats. That’s what this app does. From smooth R&B to loud, distorted mayhem. Twiddle knobs, record the twiddling, be blown away. Easy to create great beats with this.
- DM1: also a beat machine. All the traditional sounds are there. 808, 909, 606, Linn and even the odd Farfisa make an appearance (among many other classics). Loads of sounds to use either in predefined sets or create your own kits. Record patterns and songs to compose your rhythm tracks.
- Impaktor: a drum machine with a difference. Apart from the sounds, which are great and can be edited into oblivion, the way to program the rhythms is also unique: just place your iPad on the table and drum away on the surface of the table. The tracking is near perfect and, amazingly, it reacts to dynamics as well. A great way to get live sounding rhythm tracks because, well, they are live.

If it’s electronic music you’re after, the iPad can be a great tool. Attach a midi keyboard through the camera connection kit or a mic through one of the many audio interfaces that are available for the iPad and you have a great way to make music on the go. Even using the built in mic or headset mic can have surprising results, if you know what you’re doing.

It can’t replace a professional studio (yet…), but I am constantly amazed what this slab of glass and aluminium can do.
